Arthur Okonkwo Makes History as First Nigerian Goalkeeper to Play in the FA Cup Final

Wrexham's Nigerian Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo Makes History

Arthur Okonkwo, the Nigerian goalkeeper for Wrexham A.F.C., has made history by becoming the first Nigerian goalkeeper to play in the FA Cup final.

Okonkwo, 20, kept a clean sheet in Wrexham's 2-0 victory over Chesterfield in the semi-final, helping his team reach the final for the first time in 26 years.

The FA Cup final will be played at Wembley Stadium on May 21, with Wrexham facing Chelsea.

Okonkwo's Journey to the FA Cup Final

Okonkwo was born in Enugu, Nigeria, and began his career with local club Heartland F.C.

He moved to England in 2017 to join Arsenal's academy, and made his first-team debut for the Gunners in the Europa League in 2019.

Okonkwo joined Wrexham on loan in January 2023, and has quickly established himself as the team's number one goalkeeper.

Nigerian Goalkeepers in the FA Cup

Okonkwo is the first Nigerian goalkeeper to play in the FA Cup final, but he is not the first Nigerian to make an impact in the competition.

In 1999, Nwankwo Kanu scored the winning goal for Arsenal in the FA Cup final against Sheffield United.

And in 2007, John Obi Mikel played in the FA Cup final for Chelsea, although he did not start the match.
